Permaculture & Soil Health
Building Organic Matter
Organic matter is essential for soil fertility and structure. In permaculture, composting, mulching, and green manures are used to add organic matter to the soil, enriching it with nutrients.
Organic matter feeds beneficial microorganisms, which in turn improve soil structure, enhance water retention, and make nutrients available to plants.
This ties into our previous blog post “Soil Health and Carbon Sequestration, so fancy” where soil in permaculture design sequesters (absorbs) up to 1-2 tons more carbon in the soil, per acre, than conventional mono agriculture.
Why is this important?
When we grow with carbon rich soil, our foods environment thrives to produce more nutrient dense foods.
